10 Unwritten Rules of Twitter Community Building
10 Unwritten Rules of Twitter Community Building
1) Take the time to send a welcome message to your followers. Let them know who you are and what you do. Perhaps provide a link to your website, follow @MKtg4thefutre to see how we handle new Twitter followers. (Hint: It’s a unique message depending on who you are)
2) Tweet out information that your followers find useful. This part will take care of itself also, since your followers will find you based on the content you’re tweeting anyways. Make sure you are boosting this process by following users that have similar interests and tweets as you.
3) Team up with other local businesses and promote each others accounts. Send RT’s mention’s and followers to your local community, and they will return the favor.
4) Make sure you follow back those who follow you and let them know you appreciate the follow. You don’t want to be rude on the “Twittosphere” and be unengaging. 😉
5) If someone mentions you, reply to them. If they DM you a message, answer it. You are on Twitter to promote your company but also be helpful, and solve issues or answer questions your customer may have. (See this below on not how to handle it)
6) Utilize tags in your post to find users that are talking about the same things as you, and allow them to find you also.
7) NEVER fall for those “follower” schemes or Multi Level Marketing. Tweeple will Unfollow you because link schemes and MLM ploys are annoying to deal with!
8) Stay on topic and tweet about content you know or find interesting. Stick with what you audience responds to and it will generate traffic to your site automatically. Remember the key is to tweet links and useful information.
9) Utilize twitter lists and throw out mentions to your biggest community builders. These are the connectors, information sharers, or influencer’s in your community.
10) You can build a community off anything you want, whether it be a topic like #Cars, #NCAA, #Dallas, or something/somewhere else.
